The 2006 IIDA (International Interior Design Association) Calibre Awards were held Tuesday, March 28 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA. The Calibre Awards were created in 1989 to honor companies in allied professions who exhibited a high standard of quality within the design industry and who supported the effort to increase public awareness of design as well as having demonstrated concern and support for quality design on an ongoing basis. The Awards have evolved to the current format of honoring entire project teams. This year, bkm OfficeWorks was awarded two awards: “Over 35,000 Square Feet – Biogen Idec” and “Educational/Institutional – Rebecca & John Moore UCSD Cancer Center”.

From the beginning, Biogen Idec had a vision of designing a Biotech facility that would be a showcase in their industry. With two campuses in total, and the assistance of HOK and bkm OfficeWorks – mission accomplished. bkm OfficeWorks became involved in the project 18 months prior to product install. Our team was instrumental in providing design space planning, typical development, furniture procurement, project management and installation services. The Biogen Idec campus has an installed base of over 1,000 Steelcase Answer stations, with several other complimentary manufacturer products.

The Rebecca & John Moore UCSD Cancer Center brings researchers and clinicians together under one roof. For bkm OfficeWorks the understanding of how research and application would interact in the building lead us to appropriate product selection. Working with the building’s architectural designer and key team representatives, we developed a collection of products that would enhance the building’s vision. The sensitivity to a color palette that was calming and fibers that were long lasting support both the aesthetic and practical elements of a healthcare and research facility. The UCSD Cancer Center includes the Answer & Universal product from Steelcase, along with several other complimentary manufacturer products from companies like Brayton & Vecta.
